The work Valley of the Shadow of Death is based on a photograph of the same title, taken by Roger Fenton in 1855. The phrase “Valley of the Shadow of Death” can be found in Psalm 23 of the Bible. There are two versions of this famous war photograph — one with cannonballs scattered across the road and the other without them — which raises questions about the authenticity of one of the images and invites reflection on the impact of photography on our perception of distant or past realities.

The work seeks to explore the multilayered dimensions of these war photographs and to contemplate the consequences of war in general, as well as the role of the artist in the world.
