Three-channel video installation / 10 min / loop / 2023

This is a single-channel preview of a three-channel video installation.

Each of the three unedited, straight-from-camera videos presents the visual result of a creative experiment with a “harmed mirror” — a mirror with scratches and gaps in its reflective surface. In each video, the physiognomies of two people are overlaid without the use of digital or post-production effects.

Through the simultaneous optical phenomena of reflection and light transmission, this “harmed mirror” enables the creation of an ephemeral, layered image in which the reflection of the subject standing in front of the mirror overlaps with the image of the subject staged behind it.

The videos present a visual synthesis of my grandmother and my mother (first video), my mother and myself (second video), and my grandmother and myself (third video).

The artistic sublimation and theoretical contextualization of this mirror experiment invite contemplation of topics such as reflection, (auto-)reflexivity, psychological projection, the counter-gaze, the mechanical gaze, gesture as a message, subjectivity, and intersubjectivity within close family relationships.
